Curious incident of the fuel pump that did not whine in the night
In the engine compartment, drivers sidewall is a black case with
yellow warning stickers. Lift the lid and you'll find two identical
relays. The one on the right (closest to vehicle centre) is the fuel
pump relay. Swap the two relays. If the pump runs, it is the relay. If
not, if you have a VOM, test that there is power between the top and
bottom slots of the right relay socket.
If you run a lead from top to bottom the pump is powered. If it does
not run it is the pump or pump wiring. If no go, leave the lead in
place and check to see if power is getting to the pump connection. If
yes, remove the lead and connect your meter to the left and right
slots and have someone turn on the key to ignition. You should have
power for a second or three. Try again, cranking this time. Again you
should have power between left and right. If no you have a wiring or
an ignition switch problem. If yes to all the above I'd say it's the
pump.

Flip the polarity for a second before you give up. I've had a pump
that seemingly wouldn't run at a all work again after doing this.
Presumably there was something caught in the pump and stalling it,
spinning the other way kicked it back, and voila, good enough to go
on. That'd be cool if it worked in your case too.
